A cidade do Luxemburgo foi fundada no século X, sobre ruínas romanas, onde se desenvolveu como uma comunidade estabelecida no interior de uma fortaleza. Foi construída no promontório que, desde o final da Idade Média, se designado por "Bock", e tem uma das mais impressionantes vistas da cidade.
